Grand Reopening Marks a New Chapter for the Evanston Ecology Center

The Evanston community gathered on October 29th to celebrate the grand reopening of the Evanston Ecology Center, a milestone that coincides with its 50th year as a trusted hub for environmental education and community engagement.

Nurture served as Architect of Record for the project, beginning with a comprehensive feasibility study followed by a renovation that strengthens the Center’s mission to broaden environmental awareness and deepen the community’s relationship with the natural world. Originally constructed in 1974 and expanded in 2001, the building required a thoughtful reworking of its spaces and systems to better support current programs and long-term operational needs.

The design team reimagined the arrival experience, introducing a more welcoming reception area and refreshed public zones that improve circulation and visibility. Classrooms were updated to support hands-on learning, and outdoor teaching areas were enhanced to expand opportunities for year-round engagement. Space was also created to host new educational exhibits that highlight local ecology.

A major component of the renovation addressed aging infrastructure. The building’s MEP systems, structural conditions, and areas impacted by moisture infiltration were carefully repaired and modernized. These upgrades resolved long-standing issues that affected comfort and operations while preparing the facility for improved performance over time.

The project features fully electrified systems that eliminate on-site carbon emissions and is positioned to achieve LEED Gold certification. This aligns with the goals of the City of Evanston Climate Action and Resiliency Plan and reflects a commitment to transparency around sustainability practices in a building dedicated to ecological education.

The renewed Evanston Ecology Center stands ready to support the next generation of environmental learning, offering spaces that promote curiosity, community connection, and a deeper understanding of the natural environment.
