Nurture Breaks Ground on the Yannell Conservation Habitat

Nurture is proud to announce the groundbreaking of the Yannell Conservation Habitat, a visionary project on the shores of Lake Michigan designed to set a new standard in climate-resilient, net-positive energy living. Slated for completion in 2026, this residence aims to achieve full International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Living Building Challenge and Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) Zero certifications.

The Yannell Conservation Habitat, located just north of South Haven, is the fourth collaboration between Nurture and longtime client Michael Yannell. This 9,000-square-foot retirement home for six individuals is designed to function as a self-sufficient commune, combining cutting-edge energy technologies with ecological stewardship. The residence integrates wind power, solar electric, and solar thermal systems to ensure energy independence while remaining grid-connected to contribute surplus energy. Net-zero water systems, including rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse, and a blackwater treatment constructed wetland, are integral to the design. Urban agriculture and ecological restoration will revitalize the 14-acre site, addressing environmental challenges such as significant bluff erosion caused by rising lake levels and climate-driven wave action.

Climate change has informed every aspect of this design, from site selection to the integration of systems that support energy independence and ecological balance. This project demonstrates how living in harmony with nature can protect one of the region’s most precious resources: its freshwater ecosystems. The Yannell Conservation Habitat sets out to create a replicable template for sustainable lakefront development, highlighting that a resilient, climate-conscious home can be both functional and beautiful.
