Chicago Public School STEM & STEAM Program

The FY2020 budget for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) includes a capital budget totaling $821 million of investments that focuses on priority facilities needs at neighborhood schools; the district’s largest-ever Pre-K capital investment; ADA accessibility; and continued expansion of technology upgrades, modern science labs, and other academic priorities.

To support schools throughout the city, the FY2020 capital plan provides funding in five main areas: critical facility needs, interior improvements, educational programs, site improvements, and IT and security upgrades.

Nurture has been a partner with Chicago Public School system since 1992. Since then, we have worked on, and continue to work on, 70+ school buildings. The variety of work includes general classroom remodeling, infrastructure installation and renovation for new STEM and STEAM classrooms, installation or expansion of Pre-K classrooms, accessibility upgrades, new restroom facilities, elevator installations, new roofing and roof repairs, parking lot and landscaping improvements, and façade restoration and repair.

For the far south side Sullivan School (now the Epic Academy), designed by William Le Baron Jenny, Nurture researched and replicated the original ornamental sheet metal cornice that had been removed in the 1960’s. Nurture also recently generated a number of “test fit” programming plans in order for the CPS to select various existing commercial properties in which new Pre-K schools can be accommodated.
