Steelworkers Park
Located along Chicago’s historic South Lakefront, the Steelworkers Park Framework Plan reimagines a 16.5-acre former U.S. Steel site as a resilient public space rooted in both community and ecological renewal. Nurture is collaborating on the development of a long-term vision that unites the park’s industrial legacy with its evolving role as a neighborhood resource and city destination.
The framework plan engages the Chicago Park District, local stakeholders, and surrounding communities to identify priorities that strengthen connections to nearby Park No. 566 and the emerging Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park (IQMP) while honoring the site’s history and landscape character.
The planning effort builds upon existing surveys, geotechnical data, and environmental studies to inform strategies for future improvements that enhance public access and environmental resilience, outlining a coordinated approach for investment in park amenities such as shoreline protection, native habitat restoration, contemplative gathering spaces, and accessible water landings.
The result will guide the Park District in implementing thoughtful, community-driven improvements that connect past and future along Chicago’s industrial lakeshore.
