Chicago Housing Authority Independence Boulevard Modernization

Nurture is providing the Chicago Housing Authority full architectural design services for the restoration and renovation of an existing six-unit multi-family brick building along the historic Independence Boulevard in the North Lawndale community.

The resiliency-driven project will preserve the building’s charming character and beautify the property to bring the public housing units back to a leasable condition. Our PHIUS-driven retrofit design approach implements an airtight, highly-insulated envelope with all new, all-electric, energy-efficient systems, contributing to the decarbonization of CHA’s housing portfolio.

Led by Nurture’s Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) and expert consultants, the team utilized energy modeling for multi-disciplinary decision-making, ensuring material specifications, system selections, and constructability methods align with performance and budgetary goals through an integrative design process.

With a dramatic reduction in energy and operating costs, the design increases long-term affordability and empowers future Chicago families with more economic security, in a safe, sound, and beautiful place to call home.
